reuse / recycle

Student
You, MSU students, are the future leaders of the world. You can lessen your environmental impact now. Small changes which are easy to make today add up to big savings.

It’s easy. Try this:

REUSE and RECYCLE the materials you consume. You can RECYCLE white paper, mixed paper, newspaper, cardboard, #1 plastic (clear) and #2 plastic (opaque) in all the residence halls and academic buildings.

Currently the diversion rate (materials MSU recycles instead of sending to landfill) is 14%. Each cubic yard of trash disposed of costs up to $26. A 10% reduction in the land-filled waste from 2006-07 levels would result in direct savings in landfill fees of about $60,000 and additional savings of up to $40,000 in other variable collection costs.

Faculty
You, MSU faculty members, are educating the future leaders of the world. Your research is solving world problems. You can lead by example by making small, individual changes that will produce global results.

It’s easy. Try this:

REUSE and RECYCLE the materials you consume. RECYCLE in all the residence halls and academic buildings.

Staff
You, MSU staff, make the University run. Your efforts are the key to making it run efficiently while creating ways to positively impact the environment. You can lessen your environmental impact now. Small, individual changes will produce large, university-wide results.

It’s easy. Try this:

REUSE and RECYCLE the materials you consume. RECYCLE in your office, your building, and in all the residence halls and academic buildings. You can RECYCLE white paper, mixed paper, newspaper, cardboard, #1 plastic (clear) and #2 plastic (opaque) in all the residence halls and academic buildings.

MSU student David Cooper recently won 3rd place in the Association for Higher Education Campus Television Administrators Student Video Publication Award Contest for his documentary about recycling at MSU entitled "Making It Work". The short-film includes interviews with students, faculty, and staff from around the university to find out what members of our community think about recycling and what they are doing to help. Great work David!

REUSE / RECYCLE

Trash isn't always treasure, but you can turn something old into something green by finding new uses and recycling. This cuts down on waste as well as consumption.

WHAT's MSU DOING?

Michigan State University has set clear goals to reduce its environmental footprint. By 2015, MSU will reduce: waste by 30 percent, energy consumption by 15 percent and greenhouse gas emissions by 15 percent. Track how your building is doing at reducing waste, conserving energy, and recycling on the GIS website.

The new MSU Surplus Store and Recycling Center will open summer 2009, and process three times the amount of materials of the current facility.  The facility will be built with environmental principles and allow visitors to understand the recycling process up-close. Coupled with the opening of the facility in summer 2009 will be the expansion of the variety and amount of materials collected in MSU’s 579 main campus buildings.

Thanks to a tremendous increase in the use of paper with recycled content, University Stores is now able to reduce the amount of virgin paper it orders to keep in stock. University Stores would like to thank the entire MSU community for showing such incredible support for making our community a better place.
