Unplug and recharge this holiday season
Published: Nov. 18, 2016
The weather outside is getting frightful, and that means the winter holidays are nearly here! As you prepare for your favorite snowy traditions (or timely escape from the cold), don't forget to help our bustling campus unplug and recharge during the time off. Follow these simple energy-saving tips before you leave for the festivities and contribute to a noteworthy reduction in energy use - something we can ALL celebrate!
SHUT AND SECURE WINDOWSThis will reduce drafts and keep cold air out. Report any windows that don't close properly.
CLOSE CURTAINS AND LOWER BLINDSDepending on how they are used, curtains and blinds can reduce heat loss by up to 30%.
LEAVE THERMOSTATS AT 70 DEGREESUnlike your home thermostat, there is no need to set the temperature lower when you leave your workspace. Savings are achieved building-wide as major equipment is set back for the holiday.
UNPLUG AND TURN OFF UNNECESSARY APPLIANCESThis includes copiers, computers, printers, televisions, fax machines, radios, water coolers and task lighting. TIP: Use a power strip to make this step a lot easier.
SHUT THE SASHIf you work in a lab, keep fume hood sashes closed when not in use. Consider turning off any non-essential lab computers and equipment while you are gone.
TURN OFF THE LIGHTSDone in both shared and individual spaces, this simple step can reduce energy use by up to 20%!
REPORT PROBLEMSTo report problems with windows, doors or leaks; call Infrastructure Planning and Facilities at (517) 353-1760.
Thank you for using energy wisely on campus.
Have a safe and happy holiday!
