MSU participates in RecycleMania 2016
Published: January 28, 2016
From February 7 to April 2, Michigan State University will compete in RecycleMania, an annual eight-week recycling competition between colleges and universities across North America. The goal of the event is to increase awareness of recycling and waste management programs at participating schools by involving campus in a fun and friendly competition.
How it worksSchools compete in several categories to see who can collect the most recyclable materials and reduce their landfilled waste. MSU is competing in four categories this year: Gorilla Prize, Game Day Challenge: Basketball, E-cycleMania and Grand Champion. In addition, MSU will participate in a special pilot program called ZerowasteMania.
National recognition is provided to the winning school in each category. Winning schools receive an award made out of recyclable materials and win the right to host that category's special traveling trophy for the coming year.
Standings are updated weekly. To find out how the university is faring against other schools, check out MSU's RecycleMania profile page.
Gorilla PrizeThe Gorilla Prize category recognizes the school that can collect the most total paper, plastic, cardboard and household metal.
E-cycleManiaE-cycleMania is similar to Gorilla Prize but e-waste (electronics) is tallied instead of all recyclable material and data is only submitted for a one month window instead of all eight weeks.
Grand ChampionGrand Champion focuses on recycling rate, which is calculated as the percentage of total waste that is recycled instead of sent to the landfill.
Game Day Challenge: BasketballThe Game Day Challenge recognizes a school for their waste minimization and recycling efforts during a single basketball game.
