Turn off and unplug before the holidays
Published: November 20, 2015
The winter holidays are nearly here! Some of us are ready for the festivities, but many of us are still planning what we will do with the time off. Because so many faculty and staff take time off during the holidays, adopting simple energy-saving habits before you leave can help deliver the perfect holiday gift to our campus: a significant reduction in energy use and lower emissions. That's something we can all celebrate!
SHUT AND SECURE WINDOWSReport any windows that don't close properly. This will reduce drafts and keep cold air out.
CLOSE CURTAINS AND LOWER BLINDSDepending on how they are used, curtains and blinds can reduce heat loss by up to 30%.
LEAVE THERMOSTATS AT 70°FUnlike your home thermostat, there is no need to set the temperature lower when you leave your workspace. Savings are achieved building-wide as major equipment is set back for the holiday.
UNPLUG AND TURN OFF UNNECESSARY APPLIANCESThis includes copiers, computers, printers, television, fax machines, radios, water coolers and task lighting. Using power strips make this step a lot easier.
SHUT THE SASHIf you work in a lab, keep fume hood sashes closed when not in use. Consider turning off any non-essential lab computers and equipment while you are gone.
TURN OFF THE LIGHTSThis simple step can reduce energy use by up to 20%!
REPORT PROBLEMSTo report problems with windows, doors or leaks; call Infrastructure Planning and Facilities at (517) 353-1760.
Thank you for using energy wisely on campus.
Have a safe and happy holiday!
